A Pretty Good Day

The holiday season asks two things of us, spiritually, regardless of our religion. It asks us, first, "Is this all there is?" Second, it asks us, "If there is something more, does it make any difference in our lives?" In other words, "What really matters to you?"

It's the truth, though I am pretty much ashamed to say it: I hate it when the beeper goes off. It's generally off to a death, or what soon will be a death. And so it was that winter evening when I was called to meet Juan's family at the hospital (By the way, all names and identifying traits have been removed from this story so as to make this family unidentifiable).

They were gracious folks, every last one of them. The tears were just pouring down their faces. Papa, Juan, had just stopped breathing. Though he was on hospice, he had only been admitted a couple of days. Family was unprepared for his sudden change.
